The aim of this course is to provide you with the core statistical and conceptual tools needed to understand and conduct reliable empirical research in the social and political sciences.

In this series of capsules you will learn some basic tools for data processing with R. Several of the topics reviewed are part of the daily work within the INE. The videos are ordered progressively, that is, from least to greatest complexity, however, they were designed with a self-contained logic, so that you can review each of them independently. Theoretical subject belonging to the complementary curricular line, taught in the second semester of the course. The student will review the main theoretical currents that shape universal sociology since the beginning of the 20th century, through macro and micro-sociological perspectives, as well as from approaches that attempt to demonstrate or overcome the tension between individual agency and social structure. At the end of the course, students will be able to explain contemporary sociological currents relating them to current social problems.

The recognition of an insufficiency in the methodological training of those who face the daily challenge of observing, knowing and transforming social reality is based on the perception that social issues have become increasingly complex and difficult to understand; in a context of accelerated modernization, traditional tools for this purpose seem to have lost their effectiveness. For this reason, the course is oriented to provide a series of technical skills for the collection and analysis of simple and complex data using computer tools.

Theoretical subject belonging to the complementary curricular line, dictated in the first semester of the course. It is proposed that the student of Social Work acquires a broad vision of classical sociology, understanding theories that develop the different sociological currents and how these are transformed into tools to interpret social reality, social problems and their tensions. At the end of the course, students will be able to explain the classical sociological currents, relating them to contemporary social problems.

This course aims to - 1. Familiarize students with the concepts and interpretations that underpin the sociological reflection of the economic phenomenon. 2. Analyze the relationship between economy and society, and the different ways in which economic phenomena are linked to culture, institutions, networks, norms and social structure. 3. Analyze specific problems of Chilean society based on the concepts provided by economic sociology.

The purpose of the course is to introduce students to the founding question of sociology about the conditions that make social ties possible. This question is approached from a theoretically and historically grounded perspective. The course allows us to understand the main paradigms from which an attempt has been made to answer the question about the conditions of possibility of the social bond, constituting itself as an introductory course to sociological theory.

The course introduces students to the phenomenon of inequality at its multiple levels, providing tools to distinguish the main contemporary theoretical and conceptual developments, to learn how it is studied empirically in different social spheres and to encourage the ability to reflect on its manifestations and responses. in terms of public policies.
