Different Paths, Diverging Views: The Formation of Inequality Attitudes Through Life Course Social Environments and Family Background
Using retrospective survey data from urban Chile linked to geocoded census information, this article examines how the socioeconomic composition of attended schools and current neighborhoods shapes attitudes towards inequality. It finds that exposure to mixed-SES environments heightens perceptions of inequality, while exposure to majority-low-SES environments strengthens egalitarian beliefs. Parental education also leaves a more enduring imprint than current social class.
